The news is sensational! Perhaps unique in the history of the new Albanian justice! Over 30 people in prison and house arrest in the context of the mega scandal of smuggling thousands of tons of hazardous waste that the Kurum company sent from the port of Durrës to Thailand in 2024.
Who allowed such madness? Apparently, among those arrested are not only representatives of the private firm Kurum, but also many "state" representatives, seven from the Durres Port administration and seven from the "Environment" administration.
This creates the illusion that justice does not forgive anyone, no matter who they are. Moreover, among those arrested there are also women and mothers of children who end up in prison or under house arrest without trial. There is no need to complain about the Prestigj Resort that was razed without trial on a peaceful weekend day with many tourists inside. There is no need to complain about Ilir Meta who is in prison without trial, and even less so Erion Veliaj who himself applauded this popular and media justice with both hands before it fell on his neck.
But in fact, as in any theater of illusions, all that is happening with the arrests in the smuggling of waste from the Port of Durres is for public consumption.
If you analyze things more closely, two facts emerge that are even more scandalous than the scandal itself that is being investigated.
The very serious case, although organized in a group due to the high number of arrests, has paradoxically been taken under investigation not by SPAK but by the "normal" Durrës Prosecutor's Office which, it is no secret to anyone, has much more limited means and human resources than SPAK. How serious is this self-removal by SPAK?
But the situation becomes even more cynical when the Durres justice system mercilessly shows its teeth, even arresting both the current director of the National Environmental Agency and the former director of this high-ranking state institution.
Meanwhile, the former Minister of Environment at the time of the smuggling of Kurum waste, Ms. Mirela Kumbaro (today Minister of Education), not only cannot be imagined being arrested like her former subordinates, but this justice does not even dare to question Kumbaro.
Of course, it is easier for the Prosecution to put behind bars or under house arrest, "small fish", two female directors or former directors of the environment department like Marjeta Përlala or Arta Dollani, plus seven other officials of this agency, than their former big boss, their former minister who was undoubtedly unaware of anything. The difference is that the latter is personally protected by Edi Rama, who, when he is not satisfied, does not hesitate to threaten the justice system whose tools and salaries he has in his hands...
The same situation is in the Port of Durres. It is easier for the Durres Prosecutor's Office to put "small fish" like two Port Authority inspectors and about five Durres Customs officers behind bars or under house arrest than to question the former General Director of the Port, Pirro Vengu (now Minister of Defense), or the minister who appointed him and who was subordinate to him at the time of the Kurum waste scandal, a certain Belinda Balluku...
Never has Lafontaine, the world's greatest author in the history of fables, been more relevant than today in Albanian current affairs: "according to the power and authority you have and enjoy, justice sets you free or tears you apart..."
