Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has reacted to President Vjosa Osmani's decision to dissolve the Parliament, announcing that the matter has been sent to the Constitutional Court of Kosovo.

In a press conference, Kurti stated that there can be no talk of new elections without first expressing an opinion from the Constitutional Court, which according to him should review the material filed regarding the president's decision.

"We cannot talk about new elections without talking to the Constitutional Court, which has material that it must address," Kurti said.

He emphasized that the deputies of the tenth legislature have been in office for less than four weeks and that the dissolution of the Assembly at this stage is unjustified.

According to Kurti, the Constitution provides that the Assembly is dissolved only if, after three rounds of voting, the president is not elected.

"The assembly is dissolved if no candidate is elected president in the third round of voting. We haven't gotten there yet. Last night we had two candidates, but the first round wasn't even completed, let alone the third," he declared.

Kurti added that the procedure for electing the president had just begun and that the decision to dissolve the Assembly was taken before its completion.

"We just started the first round last night and we are by no means in the third round," he said.

The Prime Minister of Kosovo also recalled that the Constitution also provides for a 60-day deadline for the election of the president from the moment the procedure is initiated.

"According to the Constitution, if the president is not elected within 60 days from the start of the procedure, then the Assembly is dissolved. This is a time limit and is not related to the number of rounds," Kurti concluded.
