The music world has lost one of the most important producers of recent decades. William Orbit, the British producer and composer who collaborated with names such as Madonna, Blur, U2, All Saints, Pink, Britney Spears and Robbie Williams, has died at the age of 69. The news was confirmed by his family, who said that Orbit passed away at his home on July 23. The cause of death has not been made public.
"He will be missed immensely by us, as will all those whose lives he touched through his music, friendship and kindness," the family said in a statement. William Orbit is considered one of the most innovative producers of electronic and pop music. His name is closely associated with Madonna's legendary album "Ray of Light", released in 1998, a project that changed the singer's artistic direction and returned her to the center of the world stage.
With sounds inspired by trip-hop, techno and electronic music, Orbit created hits like “Frozen”, “Ray of Light” and “The Power of Goodbye” with Madonna. The album became a global success, won several Grammy Awards and is still considered one of the best works in the American artist’s career. Madonna herself had described Orbit as “an absolutely crazy genius”, indicating that the creative process between them was free and experimental. “I would go to him with an idea, sing him a melody or read him the lyrics and then leave him alone in the studio. Often he would create something completely unexpected and then we would work together until the song took its final form”, she had confessed.
Orbit returned to working with Madonna in 2012, co-producing six songs on her album “MDNA.” Earlier this year, he said he would always love the singer, admitting that working with her had changed his career. William Orbit’s career was not limited to Madonna. He produced Blur’s album “13,” considered one of the British band’s most important projects, producing songs such as “Tender” and “Coffee & TV.” He also produced All Saints’ hit “Pure Shores,” one of the most successful British songs of the early 2000s, as well as “Black Coffee,” which also topped the charts.
The list of artists he collaborated with includes U2, Pink, No Doubt, Beck, Britney Spears, Melanie C, Robbie Williams, Chris Brown, Katie Melua and Nadine Coyle. Another important project was the completion of the unreleased song “There Must Be More to Life Than This”, a duet between Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson, which was released in 2014 under the production of Orbit. In addition to working as a producer, he also developed a successful solo career, releasing several albums, including the “Strange Cargo” series and “Pieces in a Modern Style”, where he combined classical music with modern electronics. His latest album, “The Painter”, was released in 2022.
In March 2026, he dismissed speculation about a reunion with Madonna, stating that there would be no "Ray of Light 2", although he had prepared a project that, according to him, carried the same artistic spirit. In recent years, Orbit had also spoken openly about his battle with drug addiction. In an interview with The Guardian in 2021, he revealed that the use of cannabis, LSD, MDMA, cocaine and other substances had caused him a severe psychotic episode, which led to his forced hospitalization.
"After the substances left my body, I was able to return to normal and continue my life," he confessed.
With the passing of William Orbit, the music industry loses one of the most important architects of modern sound, a producer who left an indelible mark on pop and electronic music for more than four decades.
