Former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is being held in solitary confinement in a federal prison in Brooklyn, New York, after he was arrested on January 3 during a US raid and transferred to the United States with his wife, Cilia Flores. According to a report by Spanish newspaper ABC, Maduro is being held in a solitary confinement cell measuring about 2 by 3 meters, with only a metal bed, a toilet, a sink and a narrow window that lets in very little natural light.
He is being held in the Special Housing Unit, known as the SHU, which is typically used for disciplinary isolation, suicide prevention, or to hold prisoners deemed particularly dangerous or vulnerable. In practice, the report says, this means almost complete isolation. Prisoners are only allowed out of their cells three times a week for about an hour, accompanied by two guards and in handcuffs. During this time, they can shower, use their phones, check their email under supervision, or go out into a small fenced-in yard.
According to sources cited by the newspaper, Maduro's cries are often heard at night in the prison. He is reported to have shouted: "I am the president of Venezuela! Tell my country that they have kidnapped me and that they are mistreating us here." The Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn houses defendants awaiting trial or final judgment and has previously held several high-profile prisoners, including well-known figures from the world of politics and showbiz.
According to sources, Maduro's prolonged isolation is linked to tight security measures, as he is considered one of the highest-profile prisoners ever held at the facility. The federal prison in Brooklyn has often been the subject of criticism for difficult conditions, including a lack of staff, problems with heating in winter and limited medical services.
