Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelezkov has resigned from his post. He announced the decision after weeks of protests against the country's economic policies and what protesters say is the government's failure to fight corruption.
Zhelezkov announced his resignation in a televised speech minutes before a scheduled vote in Parliament on a no-confidence motion against the government.
The resignation comes shortly before Bulgaria joins the Eurozone on January 1. “This is the right moment to resign. Bulgaria should be part of the European countries that are building the Union. Let us complete the cycle of our European integration with the Eurozone. We promised macroeconomic stability and we achieved it, with an unprecedented increase in revenues. We will implement the fiscal framework for 2025. We proposed a budget for social protection for 2026 – an increase in purchasing power. They should show what the profile of the government should be after the 2026 elections,” he said.
