Matthew Perry's life, career, and personal struggles will be chronicled in a new Netflix documentary, which will also feature testimony from family and friends of the famous "Friends" actor.

The three-episode documentary series, titled "The One About Matthew Perry," will be released on October 27, about three years after the actor's death at the age of 54. Emmy Award-winning director Mary Robertson will direct the production.

Perry became one of the most recognizable figures on American television thanks to his role as Chandler Bing on the cult sitcom “Friends.” He played the character from 1994 to 2004, appearing in all 236 episodes of the series.

The characteristic humor, irony and unique way of interpreting turned Chandler into one of the most beloved characters of the television series. But behind the extraordinary success was a long personal battle. Perry spoke publicly about his problems with addiction and his efforts to recover. The actor was found dead in his home in October 2023. His death was ruled an accidental drowning related to the effects of ketamine.


His sister tells the unknown story
One of the most important elements of the documentary will be the testimony of Perry's sister, Mia Perry Bowick, who will speak at length about her brother. The production will also include private material from the family archive, including previously unpublished photographs and videos. Friends, colleagues and people who have been close to the actor throughout his life and career will share memories and personal stories, attempting to bring a more complete portrait of the man behind the television character.

His sister said it took her time to feel ready to share these memories. According to her, the goal is for audiences to get to know Perry beyond the Chandler Bing persona and beyond his battle with addiction. Director Mary Robertson describes Matthew Perry as one of the most important comedians of his generation.

Through television, film and stage, Perry managed to entertain millions of people around the world. But, according to the documentary team, fame did not tell the whole story of his life. “The One About Matthew Perry” aims to show the lesser-known side of the actor, from his early career and the explosion of fame with “Friends”, to his personal struggles, addiction and his efforts to help others who faced similar problems. The documentary is expected to be an emotional account of the life and legacy of the actor who for decades made millions of people laugh like Chandler Bing.
