A tanker truck carrying gasoline exploded on a busy street in the eastern part of the Mexican capital on Wednesday, killing at least three people and injuring 70 others, authorities said. They had initially said at least 18 people were injured and there was extensive property damage.

The truck exploded while on a bumpy road in Iztapalapa, a densely populated neighborhood of the metropolis, causing second- and third-degree burns to several people, according to the municipality. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals.

Images broadcast by television stations and circulated on social media sites depict the moment of the explosion. It was very powerful and caused large flames, visible from a great distance.

The footage shows a woman holding a baby in her arms, with visible burns. Another footage shows two men with their clothes partially burned and also burned. Other videos show people fleeing the scene in terror, with large flames in the background.

At least 18 vehicles were damaged. The accident is under investigation. The truck carrying about 50,000 liters of gasoline appears to have "overturned," according to Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada.
