A new and dangerous escalation of the conflict in the Middle East was marked on the evening of June 7, as Iran and Israel exchanged attacks, dimming hopes for a ceasefire and raising fears of a wider regional conflict.

Tensions flared after Iran fired missiles into northern Israel in what Tehran said was retaliation for earlier Israeli strikes. Israel immediately launched airstrikes on military targets in western and central Iran. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), warplanes struck a number of military targets in Iranian territory. Local media reported explosions in Tehran, Tabriz and Isfahan, while the attacks were confirmed by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) through the Iranian state news agency IRNA.

Two powerful explosions were reported in western Tehran in the early hours of the morning. Iranian authorities said no urban areas were hit, but emergency services and firefighters were on high alert. Before the Israeli strikes, US President Donald Trump had spoken to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, urging him to avoid an immediate military response to Iran. According to US media reports, Trump believed that negotiations between Washington and Tehran were close to an agreement and that a new military escalation could jeopardize the diplomatic process.

Initially, Netanyahu reportedly reluctantly accepted the US president's request to delay a military response, but just hours later Israel announced it had carried out strikes on Iranian targets. A US official said the US administration continues to believe a deal with Iran is possible and does not want military developments to undermine the negotiations.

Iran strikes Israeli airbases
For its part, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that it had struck the Israeli air bases of Nevatim and Tel Nof, describing the operation as a response to Israeli attacks on radar stations in several areas of Iran. Iranian authorities warned that any new attack by Israel would receive an even stronger response, adding to insecurity in the region.

Petrochemical plant in Mahshahr hit
Among the targets hit by Israel was the Karoon Petrochemical Company in the city of Mahshahr, in southwestern Iran.


According to local Iranian authorities, Israeli missiles caused damage to part of the industrial facility. The deputy governor of the region stated that the attack affected a segment of the plant, while technical teams are working to fully assess the damage. The Israel Defense Forces also confirmed that the petrochemical plant in Mahshahr was one of the targets of the air operation.

Fear of conflict escalation
The latest clash comes as diplomatic efforts toward a deal between the United States and Iran continue, but recent developments show that the situation remains extremely fragile. Analysts warn that any new attack could lead to an uncontrolled escalation of the conflict, with serious consequences for regional security, global energy markets and stability throughout the Middle East.
