A 64-year-old woman has been found alive by rescue teams in Nepal, more than 10 days after a massive avalanche of ice, rocks and mud swept through a valley in the Himalayan region.
Chandika Shrestha was discovered on September 5 by members of the Nepal Armed Police Force, who were conducting search and rescue operations in Nuwakot district. She was found on the fourth floor of her apartment, which was partially covered in mud.
Her rescue was considered an extraordinary moment, as more than a week had passed since the disaster and hopes of finding survivors were fading.
After being removed from the apartment, the 64-year-old was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Kathmandu, where she is receiving necessary medical treatment.
Meanwhile, rescue teams continue to search the affected areas, hoping to find other people who may have survived under the rubble and mud. The disaster has caused extensive damage in several areas of Nepal, while authorities are facing great difficulties due to the rugged mountainous terrain.
