Sokol Brahaj, a journalist in Turkey, spoke about News24 regarding the expected meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which is expected to take place in Ankara.
According to Brahaj, this meeting comes as part of a series of meetings between the two countries, at a time when several new alliances and sensitive geopolitical dynamics have been created in the Mediterranean. He emphasizes that NATO is not interested in escalations or clashes between allied countries, especially between Greece and Turkey, which have historically had numerous disagreements.
"There are some old problems between Athens and Ankara, mainly related to the maritime border line and the issue of Turkish minorities in Greece. However, despite these tensions, there is clear pressure from the United States so that there are no oscillations or conflicts between NATO allies," Brahaj said.
He added that the US is currently focused on several major international crises and priorities, such as tensions with Iran, the war in Ukraine, as well as other strategic issues related to China, Cuba and other regions. In this context, any serious clash between Greece and Turkey would be considered unacceptable by Washington.
"An open problem with Greece, under the current conditions, would be seen as unforgivable by the US," Brahaj stressed, underlining that the Mitsotakis-Erdogan meeting is expected to have as its main goal the reduction of tensions and the preservation of regional stability.
