The Nigerian army announced that it has released all 44 students and teachers who were kidnapped two months ago from schools in the southern state of Oyo, while arresting some of the suspects in the kidnapping.

A local teachers' union told the BBC it felt "relief" after the hostages were released, while family members said the experience had been horrific and they were still waiting to be reunited with their loved ones.

The army announced that several soldiers lost their lives during the rescue mission.
