Nepalese authorities intend to stop issuing climbing licenses to amateur climbers on Mount Everest.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper published information about this.

The main reason for this decision was the excessive number of tourists on the highest mountain on the planet, including famous bloggers and untrained climbers.

Himal Gautama, director of the country's tourism department, told the newspaper that permission to climb Everest will be granted only after the applicant presents proof that he has previously conquered at least one peak in Nepal above 7,000 meters.

Gautama added that Nepal's mountains have their own characteristics and challenges, so the experience of climbing in similar conditions will help reduce the risk of accidents.

The newspaper noted that Kathmandu hopes to similarly increase the attractiveness of the other 462 peaks that can be conquered in Nepal.

The publication drew attention to the extreme congestion of the trails leading to the summit of Everest. In 2019, a photo of a large line of climbers at an altitude of more than 8,000 meters, already in the death zone, was shared around the world.

At such altitudes, the oxygen pressure is only a third of that at sea level, which is not enough to sustain human life for long. The article notes that this pressure claimed the lives of 11 people that year.
