At least 14 people were killed and more than 20 others wounded in Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Monday, according to authorities in Beirut and Red Cross rescue teams. The attacks come at a time of high tensions in the region, as Israel has said it will continue operations against Hezbollah, despite warnings from Iran of renewed retaliation if the attacks continue.
According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, an airstrike on the village of Zifra, in the Nabatia region, killed seven people, including a Syrian child and a woman. Eight others were wounded. Later in the day, another bombardment in the city of Tyre killed five people and wounded eight. Before the attack, the Israeli army had issued warnings to evacuate residents from part of the city. Meanwhile, in Marwaniya, two more people, including a child, were killed and ten others were wounded.
According to the Lebanese news agency ANI, airstrikes were recorded in more than 15 communities in southern Lebanon during the same day. One of the attacks in Tyre hit near a Lebanese Red Cross facility. As a result of the explosion and broken windows, four rescue workers were injured and transported to hospital for medical assistance.
Hezbollah claimed responsibility for attacks on Israeli forces operating in southern Lebanon, while the Israeli military announced that three rockets had been fired at its troops. One of them fell near the soldiers, but caused no casualties. After the end of the latest Iranian military operation against Israel, military commanders in Tehran declared that the mission was closed, but warned that any further attacks on Lebanon or Iran would be met with “much harsher action.”
On the other hand, Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz stated that Israel will continue to act against Hezbollah and that any attempt to link the Lebanese front to the conflict between Iran and Israel will receive a strong response. On Sunday, Israel bombed the southern suburbs of Beirut, an area considered a Hezbollah stronghold, killing two people. The attack came despite the announcement of a new conditional ceasefire, which was reached after negotiations held in Washington.
However, the agreement has been opposed by Hezbollah and, like the previous ceasefire announced on April 17, has failed to stop clashes on the ground.
According to Lebanese authorities, since the resumption of the war between Israel and Hezbollah on March 2, over 3,600 people have lost their lives in Israeli military operations in Lebanon.
