Health authorities in North Macedonia have declared an epidemic of West Nile fever in five municipalities of Skopje, following an increase in the number of cases and a worsening of the epidemiological situation.
The measure includes the municipalities of Kisela Voda, Gazi Baba, Aerodrom, Butel and Ilinden.
As of August 11, 26 cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed, while four more people are still in the process of being diagnosed. 25 of the cases have been registered in Skopje, while one in Veles. According to authorities, the infections are mainly domestic.
The situation is most worrying among elderly patients. 22 of the 26 infected people are over 60 years old.
Twenty patients have been treated at the Infectious Diseases Clinic in Skopje, five of whom are in critical condition and are being kept on mechanical ventilation. An 83-year-old man has died, while doctors say he also suffered from other concomitant diseases.
Deputy Minister of Health, Jovica Andovski, has stated that there is no room for panic, but the situation requires caution and responsibility. Health institutions continue to monitor and treat new cases.
West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes and is not spread from person to person. About 80% of those infected do not show symptoms, while others may experience fever, headache, muscle aches, nausea, and vomiting. In more severe forms, the virus can affect the central nervous system.
Authorities have called on citizens to take protective measures against mosquitoes, especially during dawn and dusk, to use repellents and protective nets, and to avoid the accumulation of stagnant water near homes.
