Iranian human rights activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi has been sentenced to six years in prison by an Iranian court.
Mohammadi's lawyer, Mostafa Nili, said she was convicted on charges of "gathering and collaborating to commit criminal offenses," while also receiving a ban on traveling abroad for two years.
According to official records, she was also sentenced to an additional year and a half in prison for "protesting and propagandizing against the system" and two years of exile in the southeastern province of South Khorasan, where she must go after serving her basic sentence.
Narges Mohammadi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for her courageous work defending women's rights, against the death penalty, and for freedom of expression, has been a critic of the Iranian regime for years and has previously been imprisoned several times for her pro-democracy activities.
