On Saturday, May 23, the election for the new leader of the Democratic Party will be held.

Alfred Lela invited to "Opinion" in News24 expressed that he expects high turnout in the elections, describing the process more as a referendum than a genuine political competition.

According to him, Sali Berisha's opponents are aware of the support he enjoys within the party.

"His opponents know that Berisha has support. I don't think Berisha is worried about missing support, this is not a challenge. He was in the opposition and non grata and they supported him again," said Lela.

He added that the political situation in the country, according to him, shows features of an "electoral autocracy", arguing that the electoral processes are not completely free and fair.

"Albania is an electoral autocracy, so translated into Albanian it means there are no free and fair elections. There will be no low turnout. What happens the day after tomorrow is a referendum," he said.

Asked if there is a name that can realistically compete against Berisha, Lela replied that the only name he would support in this case would be himself, but without ambition to enter the race.
