The European Union has allocated 2 million euros in aid to communities affected by the devastating earthquake that struck Colombia.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the funds will be used to support the hardest-hit areas, while search and rescue teams continue operations to find survivors under the rubble.
"As search and rescue operations continue, the EU is supporting Colombia wherever possible. We are making two million euros available to support communities in the most affected areas," von der Leyen said in a post on the social network X.
The assistance comes after Colombia activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, paving the way for the coordination of European support according to needs identified on the ground.
The EU is expected to adapt the assistance based on the requests of the Colombian authorities and the situation created after the earthquake.
