An unusual event has occurred in the city of Aurillac in France, where dozens of passersby were suddenly attacked by a swarm of bees, causing panic and numerous injuries with 24 injured, three of whom are in critical condition.
Passersby were stung for about 30 minutes on Sunday morning, according to the Cantal prefecture. Firefighters and medical teams provided first aid to the injured, while police imposed security measures until the bee attack was stopped, according to the Guardian.
The three people in critical condition were taken to a local hospital. Pierre Matonnier, the mayor of Aurillac, told BFM TV on Monday that their condition had improved. According to Matonnier, a 78-year-old man suffered a cardiac arrest and was revived with CPR.
The mayor said the incident could be linked to hornets threatening a beehive installed on the roof of a hotel more than a decade ago, causing the bees to become aggressive.
Lieutenant Michel Caillat, head of the local fire department, said he had never experienced such an attack.
"In terms of the number of victims, the panic that prevailed among people and the severity of some of the injuries, it was shocking," he said.
