The Pentagon has asked US defense industries to significantly accelerate the production and delivery of weapons, after a major shortage of armaments emerged due to the war with Iran.
This is revealed by an internal Defense Department memo, which was seen by the Washington Post.
On Wednesday, Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg wrote to defense industry leaders, saying they would have up to 21 days to submit plans aimed at ensuring "much faster and more aggressive delivery timelines and/or increased production for critical capabilities."
"Production cycles that last for years are not acceptable," Feinberg wrote.
"We must drastically accelerate the deadlines of our programs and immediately expand our production capacity," he added.
The directive comes at a time when the lack of weapons has become a point of tension between Donald Trump and the Pentagon.
