"The Role and Duties of the Personal Data Protection Officer at the Competent Authorities" was addressed at a meeting organized by the office of the Commissioner for the Right to Information and Personal Data Protection, with a focus on the implementation of the new law "On the Protection of Personal Data".
During the meeting, which was attended by representatives of justice institutions and law enforcement authorities that exercise functions in the field of prevention, investigation and prosecution of criminal offenses, as well as guaranteeing public safety, the obligations arising from the new law were discussed, in particular the strengthening of the role of the Personal Data Protection Officer as a key element in guaranteeing the security and legality of the processing of personal data by competent authorities.
Commissioner Besnik Dervishi emphasized that the protection of personal data should be considered a democratic standard and not an obstacle for law enforcement institutions.
"Law enforcement authorities should process personal data only on the basis of law and proportionality. The new law on the protection of personal data strengthens guarantees for citizens' rights and sets higher accountability standards for institutions that administer this data," Dervishi said.
He also called for increased security measures and investments in secure technologies, underlining the importance of public trust in institutions.
"Implementing the law requires investment in secure technologies and increasing professional capacities. The balance between public security and the protection of personal data is essential in a democratic state and directly affects the strengthening of citizens' trust in institutions," stated the Commissioner.
The activity was considered an important step in raising awareness and strengthening personal data protection standards in justice and public security institutions.
