A powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake has struck southern Peru, causing panic among residents and strong tremors in several regions of the country.

According to the Geophysical Institute of Peru, the epicenter of the earthquake was about 35 kilometers north of the city of Coracora, in the Parinacochas department, while the focal depth was estimated at 108 kilometers.

The earthquake was also felt in the capital Lima, as well as in the regions of Arequipa, Ica and Abancay.

In Cusco, about 575 kilometers from the epicenter, a school's security cameras recorded the moment students quickly left their classrooms to move to a safer area.

The powerful earthquake brings attention back to the high seismic activity in Latin America. Peru is located on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," one of the most active seismic zones in the world.
