The Chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, hosted in an office meeting an extended representation of the Diaspora Coordination Council, consisting of Lazim Destani (chairman of the KKD), Anila Smørgrav (vice-chairman), Emina Cunmulaj, Drita Gjongecaj, Ira Londo, Mirela Mezani, Brikena Muharremi and Rosario Peta.
Representatives of the Democratic Alliance of Kosovo (KKD) said that one of their requests to the opposition and the government is that in the next elections the diaspora be represented with its own candidates in an electoral zone.
The opposition leader said that the history of the diaspora is the history of successful Albanians and especially of girls and women. After Kadare and Saint Teresa, Albanian girls in the world are the most famous and we are proud of them, Berisha emphasized.
"A national unity is of extraordinary importance. Albania is in great existential danger. In the period 2015–2024, according to Eurostat, 1.099 million Albanians have emigrated, and this is only in the Schengen area," he added, speaking about the drama of the country's depopulation.
"If this continues, in 5 decades Albania risks no longer existing," said Berisha.
He also spoke about the "Open Balkans", as part of Edi Rama's stateless and depopulation policies, weakening the Albanian economy and undermining the common national project.
Speaking about the economy, Berisha focused on the dominance of drugs in this vital sector. It was drug trafficking that led to the creation of the 'superlek', which weakened the euro and the dollar, causing problems that even led to the bankruptcy of exporters.
Berisha has called Tirana's tall and expensive towers monuments to drugs and corruption.
The conversation was characterized by warm and friendly tones, and the Albanians of the diaspora expressed their thanks and gratitude for his reception and support for the engagement and contribution of the diaspora in all areas of the country's life and its representation at all levels of the Albanian state.
