Tritan Shehu has filed a request for an interpellation with Prime Minister Edi Rama regarding the publication of an article co-authored by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

Shehu underlines that they have made a public proposal to the EU for a new approach to the enlargement process towards the Western Balkan countries.

In his reaction, Tritan Shehu says that the strategic interests of Albania, Kosovo, and the Albanian factor in the region as a whole are being violated.

Full reaction;

I filed a request for an interpellation with the Prime Minister regarding the publication of the article co-authored by Mr. Vucic. The text of the request is as follows:

— On February 28, 2026, Prime Minister Edi Rama, co-authored by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, published an editorial in the German media Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Together, they made a public proposal to the European Union for a new approach to the enlargement process towards the Western Balkan countries, abandoning full membership and limiting themselves to an integration of the candidate countries only into the internal market and the Schengen area.

Despite the fact that it is an article, it cannot but reflect a political will of the Prime Minister and consequently of the Government of Albania, all the more so when it is realized in co-authorship with the President of Serbia. As such, it necessarily has regional political and diplomatic consequences, in the relations of our country with Brussels and partner countries, which makes this parliamentary interpellation imperative.

In fact, this stance of Prime Minister Edi Rama contradicts the Resolutions previously adopted in the Albanian Parliament, which clearly express the will for full membership in the EU as a major and strategic objective, reconfirmed through the joint Albania-EU declarations within the framework of the Committee.

Interparliamentary Stabilization and Association Agreement. At the same time, this violates the principles of the Albania-EU Negotiating Framework, which constitutes a contractual commitment with the European Union. And most importantly, this violates the strategic interests of the Republic of Albania, the Republic of Kosovo, and the Albanian factor in the region as a whole.

In order to effectively guarantee the will expressed by the Assembly, as well as national strategic interests, in my capacity as a deputy of the Assembly of Albania, based on Article 80, point 1 of the Constitution and Article 96, points 1 and 2 of the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly, I request the development of an interpellation with the Prime Minister, Mr. Edi Rama, regarding the above.

Thanking you for your cooperation,
