Saudi Arabia has launched multiple and previously unknown attacks on Iran in retaliation for attacks carried out against it during the war in the Middle East, Reuters reports.

The news agency cites two Western officials with knowledge of the matter and two Iranian officials.

The attacks are believed to have taken place in late March. One Western official said they were “retaliatory attacks in retaliation for attacks on Saudi Arabia.” Reuters could not confirm who the targets were.

The Saudi and Iranian foreign ministries did not comment on the information.

It is the first time Saudi Arabia has taken military action in Iran, its main regional rival.

Iran has launched drone and missile attacks on all of its Gulf neighbors, striking not only American military targets but also politicians.

On Monday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the United Arab Emirates had also launched attacks on Iran, which had not been made public until now.

Both actions by the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia suggest that the armed confrontation has a broader dimension than initially made public.

However, their approaches have not been the same, Reuters reports. The United Arab Emirates has pursued a tougher stance and has not engaged in diplomatic contacts with Tehran, while Saudi Arabia has tried to prevent the conflict from escalating and has remained in regular contact with Iran.
