US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a telephone conversation with Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz, during which he pledged increased American support for dealing with the consequences of mass protests and roadblocks that have paralyzed much of the country.
According to a statement from the US State Department, released by spokesman Tommy Pigott, Washington will "increase emergency assistance and logistical support to Bolivia," while emphasizing its support for the country's democracy and institutions.
The statement said the United States reaffirms "its unwavering commitment to supporting Bolivian democracy and the government of President Paz in rebuilding the country after twenty years of failed socialist policies."
Bolivia is facing a severe political and economic crisis, with protests and roadblocks continuing for more than a month. Initially, farmers, miners, transporters, workers and teachers demanded measures to address the economic crisis, considered the worst in four decades. However, the protesters' demands have escalated and now include the resignation of the center-right president, Rodrigo Paz.
US diplomacy has stated that "illegal roadblocks aim to destabilize Bolivian society," expressing concern about the security situation and the functioning of institutions in the country.
