A mother and her 9-year-old son have been killed in Russian drone strikes in the Sumy border region of Ukraine, the head of the local military command, Oleh Khryhorov, said on Tuesday.

According to him, two drones set fire to a private home and destroyed it, killing the 29-year-old mother and her son. Four other people were injured, including the child's father and grandmother, who were taken to hospital with severe burns.

Meanwhile, in the central Ukrainian town of Smila, five people were injured in another Russian drone strike, according to the Cherkasy regional prosecutor's office. Authorities described the incident as a massive attack on civilian infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for pressure on companies to stop supplying Russia with foreign components.


According to Zelensky, Russia is using around 220 free-fall bombs per day against frontline communities, which, he said, Moscow continues to produce and adapt despite sanctions.

Russian threats before winter

In a post on Telegram, the Russian Defense Ministry threatened Ukraine with a power outage during the winter. "You will freeze this winter," the ministry wrote, posting a photo of drones in flight.

The Ukrainian military responded by publishing a photo of a cloud of smoke over an oil facility in Russia.

"We will warm ourselves in the fire of Russian refineries," she declared.

Last winter, Moscow carried out massive attacks on Ukraine's energy grid, leaving millions of Ukrainians without electricity, water and heating as temperatures plunged below freezing. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces have continued to counterattack targets on Russian soil. Governor Alexander Drozdenko said 51 drones were intercepted over the Leningrad region, which surrounds St. Petersburg, while a fire broke out in the port of Ust-Luga.

He said the damage caused by the drone strike was being repaired quickly. The Baltic port of Ust-Luga is a major hub for the export of liquefied natural gas, fertilizers and coal and has been the target of Ukrainian attacks in the past. Damage was also reported in the Tver region, northwest of Moscow. Debris from a drone fell on an industrial area and damaged the wall of a warehouse owned by e-commerce company Wildberries. There were no injuries.
