Around 20 schools have been closed in Borlänge, Sweden, after authorities received threats related to possible violence against educational institutions.

According to the local municipality, the decision to close 16 public schools was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff. Five private schools also decided to suspend their activities. Police confirmed that they had received information about threats targeting schools in the city and had launched an investigation into “serious illegal threats against a group.” However, authorities stressed that it was still too early to determine whether the threat was concrete or not.

The city of Borlänge, with about 45 thousand inhabitants, is located about 200 kilometers north of Stockholm.

Such incidents are relatively rare in Sweden, but security concerns have been heightened after a serious incident in Örebro in February 2025, where a gunman killed 10 people at an adult education center – the worst attack of its kind in the country’s history. Investigations into the threats in Borlänge are ongoing, while authorities remain on high alert.
