Rare Bibles from the 1400s to Arabic translations of the holy book are on display at the National Library. The space-strapped institution is displaying the treasures it keeps in its underground vaults to showcase the wealth that must be protected.
The Director of the National Library, Piro Misha, focuses on the incunabula and a Bible from 1480 that is on display in the exhibition. Written by Bartholomew, it provides information on 220 popes of Rome, up to 1480. During the interview for News24Misha says that in a few months, finally, inside the Library, there will be a restored space, storing antiquities.
"In 6 months, space will be created for unique treasures. These books should be preserved as a bank because they are valuable, while the new library has started working but it still takes time. We are taking the models of the best libraries," he said.
While a series of exhibitions have aimed to raise the image of the National Library, following its flooding, a fire outbreak, and lack of space, Misha has employed several methods to seek help: "threats," prayers, and calls for attention.
Many of the exhibited works are unknown as to how they came to the National Library. It is believed, however, as there is no accompanying documentation, that a large part of them were confiscated with the installation of communism. Those arrested from large families or well-known names who escaped due to the communist regime had their personal libraries taken away. “I read in Aleks Buda’s diary how Mithat Frasheri’s library was taken away.
"There, I read how the library of Lef Nositi, who had fled, was saved, the idea was how to save his library 5 days after the liberation of Tirana. Surely a large part of the books are of this nature, since the Library Fund went from 30 to 150 thousand books after the confiscations," says Misha. He also reports that the BK has also taken over the library of Albanologist Robert Elsie.
