The speaker of Iran's parliament and the country's chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, declared that "the era of unilateral agreements is over," in a statement released Sunday morning, following Iranian attacks on a Cypriot-flagged ship.

In a post on social media, Ghalibaf wrote: "We told you: keep your word or pay the price. Reality is knocking on the door."

Along with the message, he published a paragraph from the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran. The document states that “upon the signing of the Memorandum, the Islamic Republic of Iran will make arrangements for the safe passage of commercial vessels free of charge for 60 days.”

Ghalibaf's post comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region, following the attack on the Cypriot-flagged ship, while Iranian authorities link his message to the commitments provided for in the memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington.
