An unusual and shocking story is at the center of a new Netflix documentary, “Should I Marry a Murderer?” released on April 29, which follows the case of a woman who discovers that her partner was a convicted murderer. The documentary tells the story of Dr. Caroline Muirhead, who was in a relationship with Alexander “Sandy” McKellar, unaware of his criminal past. McKellar was convicted of the 2017 drink-driving death of cyclist Tony Parsons in Argyll and Bute, Scotland.

According to the investigation presented in the documentary, McKellar and his twin brother Robert attempted to cover up the crime by hiding the victim's body and tampering with evidence. Caroline met McKellar through the Tinder app and their relationship developed quickly, and within a month there was even talk of marriage. The shocking truth came to light when he himself confessed to the crime and showed her the place where the victim's body was hidden.

In the documentary, she shows that she was in shock and did not immediately react by contacting the police, but later decided to cooperate with the authorities, becoming a confidential informant and helping to uncover the location of the body.

The investigation ended with McKellar being convicted in 2023 of murder and obstruction of justice, while his brother was also convicted for his role in covering up the crime. The documentary has attracted widespread attention for the way it weaves a love story into one of Scotland's darkest criminal cases, raising questions about trust and identity in relationships.
