Six people have been arrested by French authorities as part of an investigation into the fires that have engulfed the Fontainebleau forest, one of the most famous natural areas near Paris and once a royal forest. Among those arrested is a volunteer firefighter who has admitted to being involved in one of the fires, the prosecutor's office said.

According to Fontainebleau prosecutor Diane Ngomsik, the volunteer firefighter stated that he "set fire to the bushes using gasoline and a lighter."

According to the latest data from local authorities, the fires have destroyed more than 20 hectares of forest, causing major damage to one of the most important green areas of the Paris region. The Fontainebleau forest, known for its biodiversity, natural landscapes and historical connection with the French monarchy, is considered one of the most important natural spaces for residents of the French capital.
