Tensions between Ecuador and Colombia have also spilled over into trade. Ecuador has threatened to raise tariffs on products imported from Bogota from 50% to 100% next month.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro described the threat as "monstrous" and said that in retaliation, his country would leave the Andean Economic Community, which includes Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru.

"This is simply a monster" that "signals the end of the Andean Pact for Colombia, we no longer have a place there," the social democrat president stressed through a reaction on the X platform.

The decision to increase tariffs from May followed the finding that Bogota was not implementing "strong and effective border security measures," Ecuador's Ministry of Production, International Trade and Investment said in a statement.

Tensions continue to escalate between the governments of the two neighboring countries. In late February, the government of Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa accused Petro's government of not adequately combating organized crime.
