The largest Albanian dictionary has been published online, bringing together more than 100 words of today's Albanian. Words of daily use, from north to south, described with their meaning or meanings. In an interview for News24, the deputy editor-in-chief of the dictionary, Shezai Rrokaj, shows the work done.
While the dictionary will be open for 9 months, so that the working group can receive suggestions, on social networks, criticism has not been lacking. From terms for political institutions to descriptions of girls, strong objections have been found that range from prejudiced conceptions, to near inaccuracies, in the way the notions have been viewed. The group of linguists has divided the work into letters, taking on words according to letters. Rrokaj responds to the criticism.
A large part of the criticism came regarding the inclusion of the Gheg dialect in the dictionary, to which Rrokaj has an answer.
This is just a part of the interview with Rrokaj. Some remarks were revised immediately, such as the term professor, reflecting more acceptable versions for some words, others are expected to be made over time. After 9 months, the dictionary will be published in paper form as evidence of the modern Albanian language.
