Tensions have risen in Tenerife, Spain, where residents and union representatives have threatened to block the port to stop the MV Hondius cruise ship, linked to a suspected hantavirus outbreak, from docking. The ship is reportedly at the center of concerns after several cases of infection were recorded on board, sparking health alerts and protests in the Canary Islands.
Protesters marched on local institutions, expressing fears for public safety and accusing authorities of not implementing proper health protocols. Port workers' unions warned that they could take extreme measures if guarantees are not made to protect staff. "We are ready to block the port if our concerns are not answered," workers' representatives declared, while local residents expressed fears of a possible spread of the infection.
The UK health authorities and the UKHSA are monitoring the situation, with around 22 British passengers expected to be repatriated after medical testing and checks for hantavirus. Passengers who test negative and are asymptomatic will be transported by special flight to the UK, under medical supervision throughout the journey. Local and health authorities are trying to manage the situation to avoid further escalation of tensions at the port.
