Guest on the show "First Minute" on News24 with journalist Ola Bruko, security expert Avenir Peka stated that the creation of the state-owned company KAYO serves as a mechanism to control the large funds that will go towards the modernization of the armed forces.
According to Peka, official military spending figures do not match reality.
"According to NATO requirements, Albania's contribution should be 5% of GDP. According to the government, it is 2%, but it is not even that much, it has been increased fictitiously. 1.5% is real and that is 400 million euros. Going from 1.5% to 5% is going to 1.4 billion euros. Increasing from 400 million to 1.4 billion means increasing the defense budget by 1 billion euros per year," he explained.
Further, the expert argued that this increase in money does not foresee an increase in troops, but rather the purchase of weapons.
"The Prime Minister, taking his experience and expertise with his partnerships with private business in many fields, has thought that this market, this money, should not be left in the free hands of the companies that come, but that he should own it himself with his people, in this case with Ron Yeffet. He has set up this KAYO mechanism not only to steal from public tenders, but to become a closed cycle where these individuals themselves determine the needs, types of armaments, determine prices and technical criteria," declared Peka.
