Peru's acting President Jose Gerry said Wednesday he was the victim of a plot to force him to resign, during a hearing before a parliamentary investigative committee on suspicions of abuse of influence linked to meetings between the interim head of state and a Chinese businessman.

Jose Gerry, who took power in October after Congress ousted President Dina Boluarte, is also the target of a preliminary investigation, which began after the press published videos showing two meetings between him and the Chinese businessman.

"I have no intention of resigning, because that would be tantamount to admitting that I did something illegal," the interim president said.

"I want to know who is behind this conspiracy," he added, referring to a case aimed at "destabilizing the country" as Peru's presidential elections approach on April 12.

Herry will officially serve as interim president until July 2026. By definition, he cannot run for president.
