New and shocking details have come to light from the shooting that rocked the coastal city of Saranda yesterday evening. The target of this attack, 50-year-old Thimjo Rubati, turns out to be a character with an extensive criminal record and known for years by both Albanian and Greek justice.

The investigative group has shed light on the past of the 50-year-old, who only in recent years had left a prison cell in the neighboring country, Greece, where he was serving a sentence accused of a very serious criminal event.

While Rubati was in solitary confinement in a Greek prison, Albanian authorities were officially seeking him on account of a voluminous corruption and smuggling dossier. He was involved in a powerful car trafficking and smuggling scheme, which also implicated customs officials.

However, once he left his cell in Greece and faced Albanian justice, Rubati managed to escape prison in his homeland. The Court of Appeals sentenced him to probation, meaning he would not serve a single day in prison in Albania for this affair.

Thimjo Rubati's past dates back to the early 2000s with serious criminal offenses against the person.

In 2002, he was arrested by the police on charges of trafficking minors, while in 2012 he was arrested again, accused of kidnapping a minor girl, only 16 years old.

The dynamics of yesterday evening's assassination show that the perpetrators were determined to eliminate the 50-year-old. From the preliminary expertise at the scene, the police have reported that Rubati was shot with a 9 mm caliber pistol.

Crime experts have seized 9 shell casings as material evidence at the scene of the attack. Meanwhile, all possible leads are being verified, with the primary focus being settling scores due to his troubled criminal past.
