TIRANA Suspended Appeals Judge Shkëlqim Miri requests the replacement of the security measure "prison arrest" with a milder measure, for health reasons.
After being informed of this request, the Serious Crimes Court has decided to appoint two forensic experts to assess his health condition, whether or not his life is at risk if he remains in prison.
He was detained during the police operation codenamed "A Second Murder" on charges of "Active Corruption of Judges, Prosecutors and Other Justice Officials", "Passive Corruption of Judges, Prosecutors and Other Justice Officials".
Judge Miri, who has been under investigation by the Serious Crimes Prosecution for at least 6 months, is suspected of receiving a sum of money to uphold a conviction that favored a convicted murderer (Gentian Doda) whose charge had been changed from murder to intentional grievous bodily harm.
After investigations and wiretapping, the prosecution established the conviction that the judge had received this amount of money, as the decision he gave was what was expected by the family of the convicted person.
To prove these suspicions, the prosecution requested permission from the court to search the apartment of Judge Shkëlqim Miri.
And in fact, the search proved effective, as they seized around 300 million lek in the judge's apartment. Specifically, 174 euros, 810 million 1 lek and 149 dollars were seized from him.
