European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the migration crisis in Ceuta clearly shows the importance of protecting the European Union's external borders. In a post on the social network X, she stressed that the EU has a strong border control system, but underlined that it needs to be further strengthened.

"We must remain vigilant at every critical entry point and maintain close coordination between all authorities," Von der Leyen wrote.

According to her, the European Union needs a process to learn from mistakes, in order to increase common European resilience. The President of the European Commission announced that the Commission has offered support to Spain since the beginning of the crisis and that it has received letters from several European leaders. She also welcomed the request to hold an extraordinary videoconference to assess the situation.

"The fight against illegal immigration requires solidarity and a united European response," Von der Leyen stressed.
