The court has imposed the security measure "prison arrest" on the former director of the Durrës Post Office branch, Elisabeta Mataj, accused of involvement in the theft of pension money. Following the decision, her defense lawyer, Ilia Ilia, reacted, calling the decision of the first instance court absurd, claiming that the detention of his client was done illegally and that there is no evidence linking her to the taking of the money.

"There is no evidence implicating Elisabeta Mataj in criminal collaboration for the theft of that amount," the lawyer told the media.

According to Ilia, Mataj was appointed director in October 2025 and, after noticing irregularities in the institution's financial system, she reported them in writing to the Albanian Post Office in Tirana. The lawyer said that based on these reports, an audit was conducted for about a month, where violations were found by two other employees, namely the head of finance and the treasurer.

"There is no evidence that Elisabeta Mataj took them. The prosecution claims that there are three film sequences where the finance chief sent the money to Mataj's office," the lawyer said. Investigations to fully uncover the incident continue, while the three Durrës Post employees are accused of abuse of office and embezzlement of pension funds.
