The increase in oil prices, under the pretext of the conflict in the Middle East, risks leading to the collapse of the fishing sector in Durrës. For the head of the fishing union, Klodjan Kapiti, the situation is very worrying, as costs for fishermen are increasing, causing difficulties in the fishermen's economy.
As temperatures rise, fish move away from the coast towards the depths, increasing the sailing distance for fishing gear, which translates into costs for fishermen.
As the price of oil at gas stations and distributors continues to rise, the fishing sector in Durrës has an appeal to the government.
"He should look at us fishermen, and lower the price of oil like everyone else. In Kosovo, oil is 1.2-1.3 euros, in Albania it is 2 euros."
Unable to meet all the demands of fish restaurants in Durrës, customers are often served imported fish.
