Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, wants to build a luxury hotel in Albania - in the middle of a protected natural area. His wife, Ivanka Trump, is also involved in the project.
Massive protests are taking place against this project, including in the capital, Tirana. The demonstrations began in late May, after barbed wire fences and heavy construction equipment suddenly appeared on a beach within the protected area of Zvërnec.
For some time now, protests have also been directed against the Albanian government. Demonstrators denounce corruption in the country and demand the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Their motto is: “Albania is not for sale.”
World-famous singer Dua Lipa, whose parents are originally from Kosovo and Albania, has now reacted to the developments.
She said she considers this situation "disturbing" during a conversation on the "Service95 Book Club" podcast with political scientist and philosopher Lea Ypi.
"It's inspiring to see how much people care about this issue," said Dua Lipa, referring to the protest movement. According to her, the country's economy should be built in a way that "serves the people."
According to the project, the transformation of the uninhabited island of Sazan, once a secret military base of the communist regime, into a luxury tourist destination is also envisaged.
The Vjosa-Narta Lagoon, on the southern Adriatic coast, is an important stopover area for migratory birds and flamingos.
