It is not space that is lacking on Earth. What is running out is the energy and computing power that the new era of Artificial Intelligence requires. Ever more advanced models require massive amounts of energy, powerful cooling systems and processing capacity on a scale that terrestrial networks are struggling to cope with. The battle is no longer taking place only on the outskirts of cities where giant data centers are being built, but is being projected into the vacuum of space. This is no longer a race to be the first on the moon, but a showdown to build the world's "brain" outside the atmosphere.
Against this backdrop, the protagonists are not states, but two private giants with planetary ambitions. Elon Musk is advancing through the Starlink satellite network, with thousands of satellites in low orbit that provide communication with minimal latency. The point is not only their number, but also their speed: the closer to Earth they operate, the lower the latency and the more real-time artificial intelligence applications can function. In a way, the global digital infrastructure is physically moving closer to the surface of the planet.
On the other hand, Jeff Bezos, through Blue Origin, is pursuing a more industrial vision: building entire manufacturing ecosystems in orbit, with stations, factories and potentially large computing centers operating far from Earth. The idea is to move the most energy-intensive systems to where the sun never sets. In space, solar energy is continuous, cooling occurs naturally through the vacuum, and data transmission is not hindered by the atmosphere. In theory, space becomes a natural data center, more efficient and more sustainable.
The fundamental question is not who will have the most satellites, but who will control the computing power that drives economies, armies, and societies. Whoever manages the networks and servers in orbit controls not only the data but also the pace at which the planet “thinks.” In the decades to come, power may no longer be measured by terrestrial borders, but by the orbits that surround the Earth.
