A serious rail accident occurred on Sunday evening in Adamuz, Spain, when the last few carriages of a high-speed train derailed and collided with another train traveling in the opposite direction. Latest updates show that 39 people were killed, while 152 others were injured, making the event one of the deadliest accidents in Spanish railway history.

This accident is the fourth deadliest since 1944, when an express train between Madrid and Galicia left 78 dead and 75 injured, with some estimates putting the number at up to 500. In 2013, another accident in Santiago de Compostela left 79 dead and 145 injured.

Spain has a long history of rail tragedies, including:
1972: Cadiz-Seville line, 79 dead in a head-on train-bus collision.
1961-1966: Series of accidents between Valencia, Madrid-Barcelona and Salamanca, with dozens dead and injured.
1970-1980: Head-on collisions and accidents at railroad crossings, with over 30 fatalities in each incident.
1997: Intercity train in Navarra, 18 dead and 100 injured.
2003: Collision between a Talgo train and a freight train in Chinchilla (Albacete), 19 dead and 38 injured.

The recent event in Adamuz reminds us of the high risk of using high-speed railway lines and the importance of safety measures, becoming a tragic warning to authorities and the public.
