In the trial against former Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj that is taking place in the Special Court, SPAK requested the summoning of 22 witnesses to prove the criminal charges against him.

Ahmetaj is being charged by the Special Prosecution Office with abuse of office in connection with the privatization of the BUKA company. The first to testify in court is businessman Lirim Fejzollari.

Among the witnesses is former Finance Minister Shkëlqim Cani, as well as members of the Myderizi family, who are the injured party in the criminal proceedings.

Special Prosecutor Elvin Gokaj stated during the hearing that through the privatization of the former state-owned enterprise BUKA, the former number two in the government has caused economic damage to the state budget of around 7 billion lek.

The former deputy prime minister is being tried in absentia because he is internationally wanted on suspicion of corruption, money laundering and concealment of assets in connection with the incinerators affair. Ahmetaj is currently in Switzerland where he has also requested political asylum status.
