The production company Artists Equity, founded by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, is facing a lawsuit from two Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office officers who claim that the Netflix film The Rip damaged their reputations by portraying them as corrupt cops.

The lawsuit is based on the true story that inspired the film, a 2016 drug bust in South Florida that resulted in the seizure of more than $20 million. According to US media, officers Jonathan Santana and Jason Smith took part in the operation against a drug ring in Miami Lakes. However, they claim that the film suggests they were involved in money laundering and illegal activities. “‘Rip’ means to steal something. We didn’t steal a single dollar,” Santana told NBC 7News, adding that since the film’s release in January, he has been receiving constant accusations and comments from people who believe he embezzled money.

Their lawyer, Ignacio Alvarez, openly accused the production of distorting the facts. "They portrayed the police as dirty. They portrayed my clients as corrupt," he said. The lawsuit also states that the two officers should have been involved as consultants to the production, since the film's story is based on the operation in which they participated.

The film “The Rip,” released on Netflix in January, is another collaboration between Affleck and Damon through their company Artists Equity. So far, neither the two actors nor the production company have publicly responded to the lawsuit.
