Prime Minister Edi Rama spoke on his podcast "Flasim" about the reopening of the TikTok platform in Albania, after a blockade that lasted about a year. Rama emphasized that this decision was announced earlier and comes as a result of a serious review process and cooperation with the company.
According to the prime minister, after the decision to block TikTok, the platform has shown willingness for dialogue and cooperation with the Albanian authorities. "To our pleasant and positive surprise, TikTok was open and active in building a dialogue with us after we made the block. TikTok has not taken us to court," Rama said.
He stressed that the decision to reopen the application does not constitute a surrender or a turning a blind eye to the problems that were previously identified. “Our decision is not a surrender, much less a turning a blind eye, but the result of a serious review process and concrete work to truly address the concerns,” said Rama.
The Prime Minister underlined that the essence of this process has been to increase security and establish the necessary filters for content control, emphasizing that this is about control in the positive sense of the word and not censorship. A special focus, according to him, has been the protection of children and young people.
"Today TikTok is accessible again because it has new security mechanisms. This was the purpose of the block in the first place," Rama concluded.
