Greece is engulfed this Friday, May 1, 2026, by a 24-hour general strike as part of International Workers' Day, bringing widespread disruptions to public and maritime transport.

In Athens, the metro (lines 1, 2 and 3) and tram will not operate throughout the day, from the beginning to the end of service hours. The transport workers' unions, through an official statement, emphasized that participating in the strike is an act to honor May 1 and to support workers' rights.

Meanwhile, buses and trolleybuses will only operate on a limited schedule, from 09:00 to 21:00. Outside this interval, there will be work stops, while suburban lines are expected to operate normally.

Rail transport has also been completely paralyzed. There will be no train services on the entire network, including suburban lines, as part of the union mobilization. The Hellenic Train company has also announced that some of the previous evening's services have been replaced by buses on certain segments.

The strike also affects maritime transport. The Panhellenic Maritime Federation has declared a 24-hour strike on all categories of ships, starting from 00:01 on May 1st until midnight. As a result, ships remain stranded in ports across the country.

Seafarers demand the signing of collective labor agreements, the improvement of maritime education, and the protection of the rights of pensioners in the sector.

Authorities are calling on citizens and travelers who have planned travel, especially to the islands, to contact the relevant companies for ticket changes or cancellations.
