A 37-year-old man has died and five others have been poisoned by carbon monoxide in an isolated hut in northern Italy. The incident took place overnight in the mountainous area of Buscagna, in the Devero Valley, in the municipality of Baceno, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, just a few kilometers from the Swiss border.
Six shepherds were in the hut when, for reasons that have yet to be determined, a build-up of carbon monoxide occurred. One of them, a 37-year-old man, did not survive.
Among those poisoned is a 19-year-old man, who is in critical condition. He was urgently transported by helicopter to the Niguarda Hospital in Milan.
Two other men, both 62 years old, were evacuated by helicopter and taken to Novara Hospital, where they are receiving medical treatment. Their condition is classified as yellow. Authorities have launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the leak or accumulation of carbon monoxide in the mountain hut. Emergency teams intervened in a difficult-to-access area, while investigations continue to shed light on the circumstances of the tragedy.
