A serious road accident has left nine dead and 15 injured in the Andes of Peru after a tourist bus overturned and fell off a hill during an excursion. According to reports, the accident occurred about 15 kilometers from the famous Rajuntay mountain, a popular tourist destination.

Peru's Health Ministry confirmed in a statement that 15 injured people were transported to four different hospitals for medical treatment. "Nine people died, seven at the scene of the accident and two others in hospital," the official statement said, adding that emergency teams would continue to provide full assistance to the survivors.

The bus was carrying about 25 tourists along with tour guides. Several other people suffered injuries at the scene, while authorities are working to fully identify the victims.

It is not yet clear whether any foreign nationals, including Britons or Irish, are among the dead or injured. Footage from the scene of the accident shows the overturned vehicle and the passengers' personal belongings scattered around the area. Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing, while local reports suggest that dense fog, common for this time of year in the area, may have been a contributing factor to the tragedy.
